Honoring Authenticity and Embracing Unity
Today is Election Day, a day we’re reminded how blessed we are to live in a country where we can vote, speak our minds, and pursue our unique paths. In my work, I talk about “being who you came to be,” and that message is just as important when we’re looking at others as it is when we’re reflecting on ourselves. Authenticity isn’t about agreeing on everything but rather respecting and honoring each other’s differences. It means creating a world where we can all show up as who we are without fear of being dismissed or diminished.
We each came to be uniquely ourselves—different in values, experiences, and aspirations. These differences are the foundation of our country’s strength, progress, and, most importantly, connection. The strength of any community lies in how well we embrace that diversity, especially when our views and beliefs don’t align.
As we step into this Election Day, let’s remember that honoring authenticity starts with how we listen, respect, and respond to those around us. We don’t have to see eye to eye to stand side by side. True unity doesn’t erase differences; it embraces them.
Here are three emotional intelligence tips to help navigate conversations when you don’t agree:
Pause and Listen – Take a moment to genuinely listen to the other person’s perspective before responding. Active listening doesn’t mean agreeing; it means showing respect and empathy for someone else’s view.
Find Common Ground – Even if you disagree, try to find something you both care about. Focusing on shared goals or values can help create a respectful and constructive dialogue.
Respond with Curiosity, Not Judgment – Instead of reacting or defending, ask questions to understand. Approaching differences with curiosity opens the door to connection and minimizes conflict.
Finally, let’s hold onto this reassurance: no matter who wins this election, I believe America will be okay. We’ve been through challenges before, and we’ll navigate this, too. Let’s keep choosing respect, unity, and compassion for one another.
