Emotional Intelligence Boost of Planning a Trip

Total transparency: I am the ultimate passenger princess. My husband Scott is the travel MVP—he plans the best trips, builds perfect itineraries, and somehow knows exactly what I’ll love. I pack cute outfits, grab the snacks, and go along for the ride.

But recently, I discovered something unexpected: planning the trip can be just as fun as going on the trip. Maybe even better.

Last year, my brothers and I surprised my mom with her dream vacation—a cruise with all three of her kids. I took on the role of official cruise director. From planning excursions to coordinating dinners, I handled it all… and I loved it. So much so, I just planned another cruise—this time with my mom, my brothers, and all of our families. Scott is officially the “passenger prince” this round.

Here’s why planning a trip is actually a masterclass in emotional intelligence:

It boosts happiness and well-being.
The anticipation of the trip alone can make you happier. Researchers say planning a vacation can bring more joy than the vacation itself.

It reduces stress and anxiety.
Surprise! When you're in control of the details, it actually frees your brain from worrying about the unknowns.

It gives you a sense of control and purpose.
Especially in uncertain times, planning something positive helps restore a feeling of agency—and reminds you that joy is something you can create.

It increases motivation and productivity.
Having something fun to look forward to keeps your mind focused and your energy up in the day-to-day grind.

BONUS EQ TIP:

Need help planning? I’ve got the ultimate travel agent for you—my husband, Scott.
(Just kidding. He doesn’t use travel agents. He is the travel agent.)

But I do have an incredible real-life travel agent I love—message me and I’ll hook you up.

And this week… I’m back in the passenger princess seat. We’re celebrating our 24-year anniversary, and Scott planned a surprise getaway to Scottsdale. That’s the only thing I know—but I can guarantee I’m having the best time right now.

So whether you're the planner or the passenger, here's your EQ challenge this week:
Plan something. It doesn’t have to be a vacation—plan a night out, a day trip, or even just a fancy dinner at home. Give yourself something to look forward to, and watch how it shifts your mood, mindset, and motivation.

xoxo, Tara
